Welcome to Padres of Mundo Verde!

We are the parent organization of Mundo Verde PCS at J.F. Cook campus. All parents, grandparents, and caregivers who have children at Mundo Verde are members — and when we all contribute through volunteering, attending events, or joining a committee, our school community thrives.

INTRODUCTION LETTER FROM THE BOARD

June 15, 2022

Hello all,

We are your new Padres Board and we look forward to working with all of you over the summer and next school year. If you want to stay in touch with us and get updates on how we are representing the Mundo Verde Cook campus parents and other caregivers, sign up here.

We would like to hear from you about how we can best support your family, our teachers and staff, and our school community. Please take this short survey and let us know what our priorities should be.

We wanted to thank the outgoing Padres Board, everyone who helped to reactivate Padres, and all those who voted. We especially appreciate those of you who have already started or joined committees. We have committees working on events, teacher appreciation, governance (e.g., behavior; teacher retention), and inclusion. We hope to restart groups on sustainability, aftercare/summer camp, arts & music, and any others that are of interest. If you want to join or start a group as a Cook campus caregiver, parent, family, teacher, staff or community member, please sign up here. We know that as a Board we do not yet fully represent our diverse school community but hearing from you will help us to better represent the entire diverse school community. We hope that our active outreach for committees and our growing community will soon.

Our vision for Padres is to foster a joyful community in which all children, family and staff are valued and nurtured. We support Mundo Verde’s mission of educational excellence, bilingualism, and community stewardship for all students.

Some of our developing priorities that we want to refine further with you all are:

  1. Community connections and belonging: We want to help foster a caring and inclusive school community through events, communication and collaboration.

  2. Teacher & staff appreciation and support: We want to celebrate our teachers and staff and support them so that they can do their work well. We will organize events and ways to appreciate our teachers and engage with the teacher union.

  3. Culture and Climate: We want to work with families, teachers and staff to help address behavioral challenges that some classrooms are experiencing, including by connecting with support organizations in DC.

  4. Academics: We want to support all students to achieve strong learning outcomes in Spanish and English. We want to get more support for curriculum development, professional development and any other needed support for students.

  5. School development: We want to support the school with larger scale projects (i.e., in the past we funded the school kitchen and playground) as well as ensure our teachers have adequate resources in the classroom.

Come and meet us this Friday, June 17th at 8:15am in front of the school. We would love to chat in person and hear about your priorities. Or join us on Saturday, June 18th at 10:30am at Garfield Park for our end of school year celebracion, organized by the events group. RSVP here.

If you have any ideas, questions or concerns, please reach out to us!

UPCOMING EVENTS

¡Celebración! at Garfield Park

June 18, 10:30-12:30pm

(1-299 South Carolina Ave SE, metro & bus accessible)

PADRES and Comunidad, the parent and caregiver associations from both Mundo Verde campuses, invite all students, teachers, staff and their families to a celebration of the conclusion of the school year!

PADRES (J.F. Cook) and Comunidad (Calle Ocho), have partnered with Corazón Latino, a nonprofit organization founded by current Mundo Verde parent, Felipe Benítez, to host this event with fun activities, music, treats and community building activities across campuses.

PADRES and Comunidad were both formed in part to foster a sense of belonging and shared experiences among families in our school communities. Corazón Latino regularly hosts events meant to generate social, environmental and conservation initiatives - we are thrilled about this natural partnership! https://www.corazonlatino.us/.

Please mark your calendar to join the cross-campus celebration! And let us know if you plan to attend HERE so we can ensure adequate water and treats.

The school is excited to provide support to make Celebración successful, though this is not a school-sponsored event. If you have any questions please contact J.F. Cook parent/caregiver Christina Scarlato at christinascarlato@gmail.com, and Calle Ocho parent/caregiver Laura Malaguerra lauramalaguerra@gmail.com.

LEADERSHIP ENGAGEMENT

Coffee Chat with Principal Netta

This Friday, May 13 from 10:00-11:00am, J.F. Cook Campus Principal, Netta Douglas, will be hosting a Virtual Coffee with the Principal.

Principal Netta looks forward to defining Restorative Practices. We will also have time to answer questions that have come to us from our families and caregivers. To help us best plan for our time together, we invite you to submit questions in advance using this google form.

Coffees with the Principal provide families and school leaders meaningful opportunities to get to know one another; learn about school initiatives and priorities; share concerns, ask questions, and provide feedback; and cultivate a community committed to the success of every student.
